It’s a good few years for New Zealand-born director and actor. From directing a Marvel film with Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok to more recently directing and acting in his latest screenplay, Jojo Rabbit. Now, Taika Waititi is set to work with Netflix.
To continue his success, Netflix has recently tweeted an announcement concerning a new animated series premiering on it’s streaming service. It will involve Taika Waititi in a Directing, Writing and Executive Producer role in two animated series. The first will be based on the classic Roald Dahl story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The second is a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas, that are seen working in the factory.
The more interesting part of this announcement is the story of the Oompa-Loompas, which were introduced in the 1964 book from Roald Dahl. However, these mysterious characters were never really built upon, and we never got a look at their back story, until the 2005 film, starring Johnny Depp.
In it, Wonka explained that in going to Loompa land to search for new flavours to put in his candy, he came across the Oompa-Loompas. Other than this information, not much else is known about the Oompa-Loompas, and this animated series, Taika Waititi will be working on seems to give us more insight into the history and origins of the Loompa people.
This could be another step up for Taika Waititi, working with Netflix. Who doesn’t love a good Roald Dahl book? The children’s books have been written into multiple different movies and more books and have probably made multiple 100s of millions of dollars. This could be another plus for Netflix over their rivals in the ongoing streaming wars.
