It’s not quite Half Life 3 but that doesn’t stop Valve from making an excellent substitute in the for of Half Life: Alyx. If you’re sad about not being able to play this amazing game, don’t worry because it won’t be long until modders remove the VR feature and turn HL: Alyx into a first person shooter.
Valve have come out and said they are “looking forward” to mods in Half Life: Alyx, especially ones that remove VR. With it being in VR that leaves a majority of players, unable to play. Having to buy a VR headset is one thing, when they cost hundreds of dollars, on top of that, you have to buy a beastly PC that can even run these games to a decent level.
There are PC’s now that are coming out, touting they are “VR Ready” costing a lot less, focus on gaming in VR and nothing else, but is still a huge investment to play one game.
As more and more sporting events move online, Formula 1 is following suit. Check it out here!
Talking with VGC, Valves’ Robin Walker, lead designer of Team Fortress 2 and programmer on Hal Life: Alyx, says a mod that removes the VR aspect of the game isn’t a bad thing at all. Walker told VGC, “I’m looking forward to it, I’ve been half trolling members of the team who are worried about this!”
You might be thinking that Walker isn’t a fan of the VR aspect of the game, but goes on to tell VGC that once they get a look at “that butchered version”, fans will understand why Valve to go with VR in the first place.
“As a result, what I’m confident will happen is that when people get that butchered version, and they’ll have lost all the things that we’ll have got from moving to VR, they will then understand very clearly why we made that choice,” Walker said.”
“There’s a part of me that’s eager for people to be able to have that experience and realise, oh, now I get it. Now I see everything we lost in that transition back to non-VR and I understand why they did it.”
What would it look like?
If you are interested in what Half Life: Alyx will look like without VR, Twitch streamer TylerMcVicker has been data-mining,and has found that you can currently go into a janky first person version of the game. It still needs work for it to work with the inventory system, weapon system, but theoretically that could be somewhat ported over and recycled from the previous Half Life games.
