We’re a day away from the release of one of the most awaited Netflix shows of the year, Space Force. And the reviews aren’t looking good…
As of today (05/28/20) the show has 2 stars (44%) on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not looking good for the new show. But let’s not forget that The Office wasn’t received with praise after the first season. Reviews were terrible, and now it’s one of the most loved shows of all time. So maybe the same can happen for Space Force?
The show that is said to be inspired by that famous 2018 Donald Trump speech stars a bunch of famous faces such as Lisa Kudrow, Ben Schwartz, John Malkovich, and of course Michael Scott himself. Written by the creator of The Office Greg Daniels it’s the first time Carell and Daniels have reunited since we said goodbye to The Office.
We’re all hoping Space Force could be our new favorite comedy, something to bring back the happy memories of The Office, but it seems that’s not the case. In fact from the trailers, it seemed like Carell’s new character Mark Naird was very similar to Michael Scott. However, an early review from Rolling Stone says otherwise;
“Mark Naird isn’t exactly Michael Scott 2.0. He has a wife, Maggie (Lisa Kudrow in a part-time role), a teenage daughter, Erin (Diana Silvers), and is more aggressive and confident than Michael ever was. He’s a plausibly orthodox military man”ALAN SEPINWALL for Rolling Stone
One of the main issues said to plague the show is the confusing nature of Mark Naird, going from obstructionist villain to well-meaning bumbler in the space of only a few episodes. Many say the reason for this is the lack of early inspiration for the show. In an interview, Carell said, “It was really based on nothing, except this name that made everybody laugh”. Does this mean the show might not even reach a second season?
Almost every review of the show so far is negative and it’s hard to see how this show can be good with so many terrible ratings and reviews. But let’s hold hope and see for ourselves in a few hours!
