Many shows have recently come under scrutiny, with tons of jokes cut from comedy series as they cross the line. This has put one show in particular in the spotlight. As we recently reported, The Office cut a scene from their Season 9 Christmas episode as it included blackface. Other jokes have also been pointed out to be a little outdated. And this has come to the attention of the original Office creator Ricky Gervais. The comedian has recently spoken out about how the mockumentary pushes the boundaries a little too far. The show would never get it away with it in 2020.
Ricky Gervais has made a name for himself in the industry for his outrageous jokes and pushing the boundaries in the comedy world. His career has seen him at award shows and creating a number of famous comedies under his belt, both series, and films. But The Office is usually the show the actor/writer is known for most. While the love for the show has not ended, there has been a call for some questionable jokes to be removed from certain episodes.
The actor believes The Office suited it’s time…
Gervais, in a recent interview with The Time of London Radio, touched on the current issue that has been risen by many. ‘Cancel culture’ is particularly popular at the minute. And the actor understands that they would never get away it. He states:
‘I think now it would suffer because people take things literally. There’s these outrage mobs who take things out of context. This was a show about everything. It was about difference, it was about sex, race, all the things that people fear to even be discussed or talked about now in case they say the wrong thing, and they’re “canceled.” And the BBC have gotten more and more careful and people just want to keep their jobs. So, people would worry about some of the subjects and some of the jokes, even though they were clearly ironic, and we were laughing at this buffoon being uncomfortable around difference‘.
Would the show ever be taken off air?
The comedian goes on to say that many people want to see it banned. But that’s not to say it ever will be. This is not to rule out a reunion – The NBC series would more than likely adapt to the current situation. Humor changes, and while the show has been described as ‘insensitive’, a reunion/spinoff would ensure more people are happy.
The Office is being taken off Netflix in 2021, so you may need the boxset…
