The controversial couple had their fair share of ups and downs. Even if their relationship barely spanned a season worth of episodes. The majority of fans rooted for Jim and Pam, yet some felt that Jim and Karen were a better match. The Office ended more than seven years ago, but more information about the mockumentary is still being revealed. While their rocky relationship ended pretty bitter, things could have been a lot worse!
Stephen Merchant, the co-creator of the British version of The Office alongside Ricky Gervais, has revealed some secrets about Jim and Karen’s short-lived romance. A ‘sloppy drunk kiss’ was intended to be included in the series. In the Diwali episode, we were meant to say the pair hook up. John Krasinski and Rashida Jones even filming the scene, but producers went another way. Merchant, alongside Jones, felt that fans would have hated seeing this, meaning it was cut!
Rashida Jones was incredibly wary that fans would have disliked this type of interaction between Jim and Karen. Ultimately people were rooting for Pam and Jim, so the scene ended up on the cutting floor. Jenna Fischer recently mentioned this in her podcast with Angela Kinsey, announcing that ‘Diwali’ had a scene written up where the pair would kiss. Fischer suggested that Jim and Karen were meant to go to a bar with Andy Bernard, with the camera secretly filming the pair as they would make out on the street!
Angela Kinsey further explains the advice Stephen Merchant gave to the producers. Merchant ultimately decided that they cut the scene. The actress told podcast listeners that ‘Rashida said she felt like Stephen really understood the relationships and that this was going too far, too bold, too quickly, and it would sort of sabotage anything that Jim and Karen could possibly be as a foil for Pam’.
