Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been hit with a number of difficult tasks over the past few months. The world recently protested against racial injustice. George Floyd’s death caused millions to join together for the Black Lives Matter movement. The protests have demanded change in the police force, which has meant B99 has had to look close to home. While the sitcom attempts to approach the police force light-heartedly, fans felt that recent events could not be ignored in the show. With this, there have come a number of challenges, with Captain Holt actor Andre Braugher explaining the next steps…
Since the movement started, Brooklyn Nine-Nine decided to scrap four new episodes that had already been filmed. The writing team has also decided to change their approach for the newest upcoming season. Braugher recently discussed future plans for the show in The Awardist podcast. The actor has suggested that the police’s representation in the comedy will now change.
Andre Braugher said:
“It’s a very complicated subject, but I think they have to be portrayed much more realistically, in terms of this: the convention… that police breaking the law is okay because somehow it’s in the service of some greater good, is a myth that needs to be destroyed. We’re going into an eighth season with a new challenge, which is that everyone’s knowledge and feelings about police… have been profoundly affected”.
The star continued: “What we have from (creator) Dan (Goor) is a commitment to write a smart show that will not attempt to hide itself in a fantasy. So the Nine-Nine is going to have to deal with what we know about the New York Police Department”.
It seems NBC will face difficulty ahead when touching upon future storylines in the show. Chelsea Peretti recently put her opinion forward about the sitcom, as the Gina actress felt that Season 8 should ‘defund the police’. The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been outspoken when it comes to the future of the comedy and how they personally feel about its approach. Terry Crews, in particular, has also spoken to a number of news outlets about the next season of B99. For now, it seems that new episodes are being put on hold. Not only has production been halted anyway due to the ongoing pandemic, but the team wants to get the new season right and bring issues to light.
