The entertainment industry is a scary place for young actors. Especially in the current day when scandals are exposed daily. Netflix’s Stranger Things has been a huge success over the past few years, with many of the cast under the age of 18. But with that comes the exposure, and it sadly means young actors are watched by the media and fans alike. Natalia Dyer, the actress who plays Nancy Wheeler in the hit series, has recently spoken out on wanting to protect her co-stars…
While Dyer is currently 25, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin were just between the ages of 11-14 when the first season was brought to us in 2016. The actress reflected on the pressure of growing up in the spotlight, as the cast of grown up in the public eye. Speaking to The Independent, she said: “There are so many layers going on here. I generally feel like, to me, it’s oversexualising them”.
“I feel protective over the younger kids even though they’re not kids anymore, they’re teens. They’re all great people and all having to grow up in very crazy circumstances. As a private person, I just feel like, leave people alone – unless you’re talking about their work or what they want to talk about. It’s a very tricky and complex issue”. With the popularity of Stranger Things only on the up, the teenagers from the Netflix Original are in the media more often. This led the actress to say “there must be a bigger concept behind it as to why. Just let people be the people that they are, without any judgement”.
And it seems the young cast will only be exposed more often, as the Duffer Brothers recently announced that season 4 will not be the last. And thankfully, this means the cast will grow with the show and lean on each other for support while dealing with the outside world. Millie Bobby Brown recently spoke out about the pressure of social media adding to the issue. She said “the last few years haven’t been easy, I’ll admit that. There are moments I get frustrated from the inaccuracy, inappropriate comments, sexualisation, and unnecessary insults that ultimately have resulted in pain and insecurity for me”.
Let’s protect the Stranger Things cast at all cost!
It’s sad that such a young bunch of kids have to deal with these things. And we are grateful that they bring us one of the best sci-fi shows known to man! Season 4, we are ready for you!
