In recent weeks, we’ve reported on the work Netflix has been doing behind closed doors to create an even better streaming service. Well, if that’s even possible. The company recently invested in it’s biggest movie yet, The Gray Man, while also hinting that they are working on a fantasy franchise. But while this news is great, a current smash hit looks set to be a franchise. And we are very excited about it!

The Old Guard is not even a month old yet. But it’s already headed straight to the top 10 Netflix Original movies. While a sequel hasn’t yet been confirmed by the streaming service, the movie sets up another installment. The studio is discussing the possibility of turning The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron, into a franchise. Ted Sarandos, the Chief Content Officer at Netflix has said we should be expecting exciting things in the future…

Sarandos announced: ‘I think franchise is the active, successfully — successful world-building. And video games obviously have a world-building aspect to them, but so do books and so do graphic novels and so do comic books and so does original IP. And really, this is a matter of how well it’s executed. We were really unbelievably encouraged by the first attempt at it here with The Old Guard, which is kind of a new flavor of that kind of storytelling that I think has got a world and stories to be told for some time to come’. This means The Old Guard is likely to open plenty of doors, as the storyline isn’t restricted to just one movie.

The Old Guard is based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel, as a trilogy is intended for the series. The second novel is set for a release in September, which means script plans will more than likely follow. Rucka suggested that: “there have been discussions, nothing is confirmed, and I don’t think there will be a decision made as to whether or not another one is in the offering for a while yet. The decision to make another one is going to be made by people who are far outside of my lane. If they decide to do another one, I am absolutely there for it”.

So it seems, like always, that it’s in the hands of the Netflix user. In the past, the company has used viewer data to determine where a series or film is going. With the Old Guard proving a success, it is more than likely more is to come!
