Lord of the Rings still lives on, 20 years after the first films hit cinema screens. Lord of the Rings is currently in production, as Amazon Prime Video are producing a series based on the books. And while Orlando Bloom has recently spoken out to say he would possibly make a cameo, Hugo Weaving has completely ruled it out.
The actor has recently spoken to Variety to tell the world that his much loved character Elrond won’t be coming back – with Weaving playing him anyway. When asked whether he would consider appearing in the oncoming Amazon series, Weaving stated “No way, Absolutely no”. Oh no!
Hugo Weaving starred as the half-elven leader for both trilogies, appearing in both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Amazon is currently adapting the smash-hit but there is no clue yet whether it will focus on the characters before or after the events we have already viewed. Either way, Weaving has categorically ruled out ever coming back. While he won’t be returning to the LOTR franchise, there is one franchise he would have loved to go back to…
“Matrix might have happened”
Weaving seems to have shunned Lord of the Rings, but The Matrix is a project he wanted to return to. Scheduling conflicts prevented the actor from reprising his role. He explains: “Matrix’ might have happened. But ‘Lord of the Rings,’ no, I would never — I’m not interested in that at all. Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it”.
So has Weaving retired big blockbuster movies and series? The Matrix seems to be the only project to pique his interest, as it would have been the fourth instalment for Weaving to feature as Agent Smith. Speaking of future films, Weaving stated: “they have to be something really interesting, with a different twist to make me really keen to do it”. What a shame we won’t be seeing him in the new Amazon series!
