Netflix is Being Sued AGAIN For Enola Holmes

Netflix isn’t having a good time of it lately. Enola Holmes only dropped on the streaming service a week ago, yet they are facing a second court battle. Netflix was originally sued for Enola Holmes because, for obvious reasons, they focused on Sherlock Holmes’ sister. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the series to focus only on Sherlock Holmes. Nancy Springer has adapted the novel, with Netflix picking it up. Although Enola Holmes has been a huge success after only a week, Netflix has run into more trouble…

However the streaming platform is now facing another legal battle by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate. The movie focuses on Enola, played by Millie Bobby Brown, as she tracks her mother Eudoria down after mysteriously vanishing.

Netflix, alongside Legendary Pictures, Penguin Random House, and Nancy Springer are collectively being sued.

This is because it was an ‘infringement of copyright’ to show a warmer side of Sherlock Holmes. In Enola Holmes, we see that Sherlock is soft and approachable. As the estate owns the final 10 stories of the series (where Sherlock is more friendly), Netflix’s depiction of the detective outright copies the behavior of the original books. The complaint suggests that Enola Holmes mirrors the original series. “Holmes needed to be human. The character needed to develop human connection and empathy”. Who would have thought that giving Sherlock a softer side in Enola Holmes would cause this many problems!

Henry Cavill has recently spoken about the issues that have arisen. GQ recently asked for the actor’s opinion on the legal battle surrounding Enola Holmes. Speaking about the lawsuit, Cavill said: “Haha, honestly, nothing surprises me anymore. I mean, honestly, I don’t have a take on it. It’s a character from a page which we worked out from the screenplay, the legal stuff is above my pay grade”.
