We all shipped them. You would be lying if you didn’t. Season 3 of Stranger Things introduced Robin to the group, as she and Steve worked together at Scoops Ahoy. As we watched each episode, the two become very close, leading millions of viewers to believe that the pair with come together. Their chemistry ended up being purely platonic, with Robin telling Steve her sexual identity in the last episode of S3. But their friendship was intended to be much more…
Steve hasn’t had the best time throughout each season of Stranger Things. And Robin’s character looked set to give him the happy ending we’ve all been wanting. But in the midst of tracking Russians underneath a shopping mall, the news that Robin isn’t interested in boys was one of the most shocking moments of the series. Maya Hawke has recently spoken out to suggest that this wasn’t part of the original script. There was a possibility these two could have been together, awww!
Robin has become an ICON!
Maya revealed that over time it became more obvious that Robin and Steve weren’t going to be romantically involved. The actress told Wall Street Journal “Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and Steve shouldn’t get together and that she’s gay. Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever”.
And that’s not all. Maya has also spoken to Variety to explain the decision around Robin’s sexuality. It was not something that was planned, but something that fell upon the writers around the fourth or fifth episode. Maya Hawke said: “The Duffer brothers and I and Shawn Levy had a lot of conversations throughout shooting, and it wasn’t really until we were shooting episode 4 and 5, I think, that we made the final decision. It was kind of a collaborative conversation, and I’m really, really happy with the way that it went”. How amazing that Maya had a say in her character development!
Maya continued to say that she hopes her character helps viewers. “Sometimes we can have empathy for people onscreen that we wouldn’t normally have empathy for in real life,” she said. “If I can hope for anything, it’s that maybe some people fell in love with Robin and that helped them fall in love with girls who love girls and boys who love boys”. We love you!
