With 2020 proving to be a shocking year for us all, I’m A Celeb saved us from boredom. So much so, that they have already had the highest ratings after only launching its 20th series on Sunday night! For many people, I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here is the highlight of their year. The ITV show provides us with stellar entertainment, as for three weeks we watch celebrities take on bush tucker trials that has them gagging and screaming!
I’m A Celeb opened with its highest viewing figures in seven years. 12 million people watching the premiere of the 2020 series. Despite the show having to be filmed in Wales rather than Australia, it seems fans are adjusting to the new format. On Sunday night, the show peaked at 12 million people, with an average of 10.9 million viewers. Amazing!
This is a huge achievement for ITV, especially with the uncertainty of whether audiences would enjoy the completely new format. I’m a Celeb also has the ‘biggest overnight audience of any British TV channel since the Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special last December’. The show is being filmed in a ‘haunted castle’ in Wales, with standout celebrities including Jordan North and Shane Ritchie. 12 million people is huge!
Despite the show remaining popular in millions of households, viewership has declined over the years. The 2019 series opened to 10 million viewers, as Ant returned after Holly Willoughby replaced him for the 2018 series. But two weeks later, viewership declined to 5 million. The 2020 series has proven to be a hit, as the launch episode has been the fifth-biggest since the show began! Let’s hope the millions who stopped watching have fallen back in love!
